Kobarid may be small, but there is much more to discover here than first meets the eye. The Soča and Nadiža rivers, hidden waterfalls, mountain trails, centuries of history and some of Slovenia’s most interesting food experiences are all within easy reach.
We grew up here, and this guide is our personal selection of places and experiences we would recommend to friends visiting Kobarid — from the well-known sights worth seeing to quieter places that many visitors never discover.
Discover Kobarid on Foot
Some of Kobarid’s most interesting sights can be explored on foot. From historic landmarks above the town to the turquoise Soča River and Kozjak Waterfall, walking is one of the best ways to discover Kobarid and its surroundings.
St. Anthony & the Italian Charnel House
A short walk from the centre leads up to St. Anthony’s Church and the Italian Charnel House, where the remains of more than 7,000 Italian soldiers from the First World War are laid to rest. The hill also offers a beautiful view over Kobarid and the surrounding mountains.
Tonovcov Grad
Continue towards Tonovcov Grad, an important late Roman hilltop settlement above the Soča Valley. Today, the archaeological remains and peaceful forest setting make it an interesting stop before descending towards the river.
Napoleon Bridge over the Soča
One of Kobarid’s most recognisable landmarks crosses the Soča just outside the town. The stone bridge is surrounded by steep riverbanks and turquoise water, making it worth a stop even before continuing towards Kozjak.
Kozjak Waterfall
Finish at one of the best-known natural sights around Kobarid. The 15-metre Veliki Kozjak falls into a dark rocky chamber, creating one of the most distinctive waterfall settings in the Soča Valley.
Go Beyond Kozjak: Waterfalls Most Visitors Miss
Kozjak may be the best-known waterfall around Kobarid, but it is far from the only one worth discovering. A little further from the usual tourist routes, you can find much quieter waterfalls — including two that can easily be explored on the same outing.
Svino Waterfall
Just outside Kobarid, near the small village of Svino, a forest path leads to this quiet local waterfall. It is much smaller and less dramatic than Kozjak, but that is part of its charm — you will often find very few people here.
Gregorčič Waterfall
Gregorčič Waterfall is one of our favourite waterfalls in the entire Soča Valley. Hidden below the slopes of Krn, the water drops dramatically between steep rock walls into the gorge below. It takes a little more effort to reach, but the setting makes it well worth the walk.
Brinta Waterfall
Brinta Waterfall lies close to Gregorčič Waterfall, making it easy to combine both in the same outing. If you are already making the trip to this quieter corner of the valley, seeing the two waterfalls together makes the walk even more worthwhile.
See Kobarid from Above
For a different perspective of Kobarid, walk up to Veliki Rob, a small hill rising directly above the town. The viewpoint opens across Kobarid, the Soča Valley and the surrounding mountains, making it a great choice when you want a shorter walk without committing to a full day in the mountains.
Hiking Around Kobarid
Kobarid is surrounded by mountains, with hiking options ranging from shorter local walks to demanding full-day adventures. If you enjoy spending time in the mountains, there is enough here to keep you exploring well beyond a single day.
Krn — 2,244 m
If we had to recommend just one mountain hike around Kobarid, it would be Krn. Rising high above the Soča Valley, it is one of the most recognisable mountains in the area and rewards the climb with wide views across the Julian Alps and the valleys below. The classic approach from Planina Kuhinja is a proper mountain day, so start early and come prepared.
Krasji Vrh — 1,773 m
A quieter alternative with beautiful views towards Krn and the surrounding peaks. A great choice if you want a proper mountain hike away from the most popular routes.
Matajur — 1,642 m
Standing on the border between Slovenia and Italy, Matajur offers wide views in both directions. On a clear day, the panorama stretches from the Julian Alps towards the Adriatic.
Stol — 1,673 m
The long grassy ridge of Stol rises above the Nadiža Valley and Breginjski Kot. Its open slopes and extensive views give this hike a completely different character from the higher rocky peaks.
Ozben — 750 m
A much more local option close to Kobarid and a good choice when you want to explore the hills above the valley without heading for one of the better-known summits.
Explore Drežnica by E-Bike
Cycling is one of the best ways to explore the villages and landscape above Kobarid. With an e-bike, you can turn the climb towards Drežnica into a beautiful half-day adventure beneath the slopes of Krn.
From Kobarid, climb towards Drežnica, a mountain village with one of the most impressive settings in the area. From there, continue through Magozd and descend back towards the Kozjak area before returning to Kobarid. It makes for a beautiful loop through the villages and landscape beneath Krn, although the exact route should match your riding experience as some sections are better suited to mountain bikes.
Discover the Other River: The Nadiža Valley
The Soča may get most of the attention, but just a short drive from Kobarid you will find a completely different river experience. The Nadiža is smaller, calmer and noticeably warmer in summer, with clear pools and gravel beaches that make it especially popular with families.
Nadiža at Robič
Robič is one of the easiest places to reach the Nadiža from Kobarid. It is a simple option for families or anyone looking to spend a few relaxed hours by the river on a hot summer day.
Podbela
If you have a little more time, continue deeper into the Nadiža Valley towards Podbela. The surrounding riverbanks and pools make it a great place to slow down, swim and spend an easy summer afternoon.
Napoleon Bridge over the Nadiža
Further into the valley, an old stone bridge crosses the Nadiža in a beautiful natural setting. It is not the same Napoleon Bridge that crosses the Soča near Kobarid, but another historic bridge carrying the same name.
When It Rains: Discover Kobarid’s History
A rainy day is a good opportunity to visit the Kobarid Museum in the centre of town. Its permanent exhibition tells the story of the First World War on the Soča Front, with particular focus on the Battle of Kobarid in 1917. It is well worth a visit even when the weather outside is perfect.

The Soča is beautiful from the riverbank, but some of the best memories are made in the water. Kobarid is an excellent base for exploring the river and the surrounding canyons with a local guide.
Rafting on the Soča River
Rafting combines the turquoise scenery of the Soča with rapids, swimming and plenty of fun along the way. Different sections of the river make it possible to choose an experience that suits families, first-time rafters and those looking for a more adventurous trip.

Canyoning takes you into a completely different side of the valley, through narrow gorges, natural slides, pools and waterfalls. From playful beginner canyons to more technical descents, there are options for different levels of experience.

For such a small town, Kobarid has an exceptional food scene. From one of Slovenia’s most celebrated restaurants to relaxed local food, home-raised meat, breakfasts and quick bites, eating well is an important part of spending time here.
Jelenov Breg
Hidden beneath Mount Matajur, Jelenov Breg is one of our favourite places for an authentic local experience. This family-run farm combines homemade Slovenian food, a peaceful mountain setting and genuine hospitality. It is well worth the short drive from Kobarid.

Just outside Kobarid towards Robič, Postaja Poljana is a great choice for hearty local food. The family raises its own cattle, and meat from their farm plays an important role on the menu.

Camping is one of the best ways to enjoy the outdoor character of the Soča Valley. Around Kobarid you will find several good options, whether you prefer a peaceful setting close to town or a campsite right beside the Soča River.
Kamp Rut
Located in the small village of Svino, just outside Kobarid, Kamp Rut is our first choice for a peaceful stay close to town. The campsite is surrounded by nature and offers beautiful views towards Krn, Matajur and Stol while remaining within easy reach of Kobarid.

Kamp Koren is located on the opposite side of the Soča from Kobarid, within walking distance of the town centre. Its location makes it a convenient base for exploring Kobarid, the river and nearby sights without relying on the car for everything.

Set beside the Soča in a quiet location near Kobarid, Kamp Lazar is another good option for travellers who want to stay close to the river. From here, walking paths provide easy access towards Kobarid and the surrounding area.

Kobarid is small, and that is part of what makes it such a good base for exploring the Soča Valley. Within a short distance you can be walking beside the Soča, swimming in the Nadiža, hiking in the mountains, discovering waterfalls or simply enjoying good food in town.
There is no need to rush through it all. Stay a little longer, slow down and explore beyond the places everyone already knows — some of the best experiences around Kobarid are the ones you did not originally plan for.
